Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Russia, Scandinavia, and other parts of Europe for enhancing physical and mental performance. In recent years, scientific interest has focused on its potential to support cognitive function, including concentration and attention. Several small-scale randomized controlled trials and double-blind studies have examined Rhodiola’s effects on cognitive performance in humans, particularly during periods of fatigue or stress.
Some studies report that Rhodiola supplementation may reduce mental fatigue and improve aspects of attention and concentration in healthy individuals experiencing stress or fatigue. For example, a 2012 study published in Phytotherapy Research found that Rhodiola extract improved attention, speed, and accuracy in cognitive tasks among students during exam periods. Similarly, a 2009 review in HerbalGram noted modest improvements in mental performance and fatigue resistance.
However, the quality and size of these studies are generally limited, with small sample sizes and varying methodologies. While some positive effects have been observed, systematic reviews and meta-analyses note that the evidence is not yet robust enough to draw firm conclusions, and larger, high-quality trials are needed. Thus, while there is preliminary scientific evidence supporting Rhodiola’s use for improving concentration, the strength of the evidence is moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
