For the health condition: Concentration (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oxiracetam is a synthetic compound in the racetam family, commonly classified as a nootropic. Its primary historical and current use has been as a cognitive enhancer, particularly for various forms of cognitive impairment. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that oxiracetam may support attention and concentration, but the quality and quantity of evidence are limited.
Several small, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials—mostly conducted in the 1980s and 1990s—have evaluated oxiracetam for cognitive deficits, particularly in elderly patients with mild to moderate dementia or cognitive impairment. Some of these studies reported modest improvements in attention and concentration measures compared to placebo. For example, a study by Gallai et al. (1992) found that patients with organic brain syndrome experienced improvements in memory and attention after oxiracetam administration. However, these studies often suffered from small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological limitations.
In healthy adults, the evidence is even weaker. While animal studies suggest possible neuroprotective and pro-cognitive effects, high-quality research in humans is lacking. There is no consensus in the scientific community regarding oxiracetam's efficacy for improving concentration in otherwise healthy individuals.
In summary, oxiracetam has some low-to-moderate quality scientific evidence supporting its use for enhancing concentration, especially in populations with cognitive impairment, but robust, large-scale, and modern clinical trials are lacking. Its use for improving concentration in healthy people is not well-supported.
