Evidence supporting the use of: Omega-3 fatty acids
For the health condition: Concentration (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been studied for their potential role in supporting cognitive function, including concentration. The scientific rationale stems from the fact that DHA is a major structural component of brain cell membranes, and both EPA and DHA are involved in modulating neuroinflammation and neurotransmitter function. Some clinical studies, particularly in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), have reported modest improvements in attention and cognitive performance with omega-3 supplementation. A 2012 meta-analysis published in Neuropsychopharmacology indicated small but significant improvements in ADHD symptoms with omega-3 supplementation, although the effect sizes were modest. In adults, evidence is less robust, with some studies suggesting mild improvements in cognitive performance, while others show no significant benefit. Overall, while the scientific evidence is not strong, there is some support for the use of omega-3 fatty acids in improving concentration, especially in populations with lower baseline omega-3 status or certain neurodevelopmental conditions. Large-scale, well-controlled studies are still needed to clarify their effectiveness, but omega-3 fatty acids remain a popular option due to their safety profile and potential broader health benefits.
