Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glycine is a non-essential amino acid involved in numerous physiological processes, including functioning as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. There is some scientific interest in glycine's potential cognitive effects, particularly regarding memory and attention. A few small clinical studies have explored glycine supplementation and its impact on cognitive performance. For example, a 2011 randomized controlled trial found that glycine supplementation (3g/day) modestly improved certain aspects of memory and attention in healthy young adults compared to placebo. Other research suggests glycine may enhance NMDA receptor activity, which is important for learning and memory processes.

However, the number of studies is limited, and most have small sample sizes and short durations. The observed effects on concentration and cognitive function are generally mild. There is not yet sufficient evidence to recommend glycine supplementation broadly for improving concentration, especially in the absence of glycine deficiency or specific neurological conditions. No major clinical guidelines support its use for this purpose. Thus, while preliminary research indicates some possible benefit, the overall evidence remains weak to moderate, and more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety in this context.
