Evidence supporting the use of: Eleutherococcus senticosus
For the health condition: Concentration (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Eleutherococcus senticosus (commonly known as Siberian ginseng) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Russia, China, and other parts of Asia, where it is used as an adaptogen to help the body resist stress and improve overall vitality. In these traditional contexts, Eleutherococcus has been used to address symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and mental exhaustion, which are sometimes associated with poor concentration. While there is anecdotal and traditional support for its use to enhance mental performance, direct scientific evidence specifically linking Eleutherococcus senticosus to improved concentration or cognitive function is limited and of low quality. Some small clinical trials and animal studies suggest potential benefits in mental performance, but results are mixed and methodological limitations are common. Most authoritative reviews and regulatory bodies conclude that current evidence does not robustly support its use for improving concentration in otherwise healthy individuals. Thus, while Eleutherococcus senticosus is traditionally used for conditions that might include poor concentration, strong scientific validation is lacking.
