Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Convolvulus prostratus, commonly known as Shankhpushpi, is widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for improving cognitive functions, including attention and concentration. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Shankhpushpi as a "Medhya Rasayana," a category of herbs believed to enhance memory and intellect. Its use for mental clarity, memory enhancement, and as a nervine tonic is well documented in traditional Indian medicine. Preparations containing Convolvulus prostratus are often prescribed in Ayurveda to children and adults experiencing poor concentration or cognitive fatigue.

Scientific studies on this plant are limited, but some preclinical animal studies suggest potential nootropic (cognition-boosting) effects. For instance, extracts of Convolvulus prostratus have demonstrated some improvement in learning and memory in rodent models, possibly due to antioxidant, neuroprotective, and anxiolytic properties. However, high-quality, large-scale human clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for poor concentration are lacking. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and some preliminary scientific data is promising, robust scientific validation remains insufficient at this time. The evidence supporting its use for poor concentration is thus primarily traditional, with a moderate rating due to the lack of significant clinical research.
