Citicoline (also known as CDP-choline) has been studied for its potential cognitive-enhancing effects, including support for concentration and attention. Citicoline is a precursor for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an essential component of neuronal membranes, and is involved in the generation of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine. Several clinical studies and reviews have examined citicoline's effects on cognitive function, particularly in populations with cognitive impairment, stroke, or brain injury. Some research indicates that citicoline supplementation may improve attention, focus, and mental performance in these groups. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Food and Nutrition Sciences (2011) found that citicoline improved attention and psychomotor speed in healthy adult women. Another randomized trial in adolescents found improved sustained attention and decreased impulsivity with citicoline supplementation. However, while there is some evidence in favor of its cognitive benefits, especially related to attention and concentration, the overall quality and quantity of evidence in healthy individuals or those with only mild concentration problems is moderate. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to confirm these effects and determine optimal dosing. Thus, citicoline's use for supporting concentration is justified by a moderate degree of scientific evidence, although it is not yet conclusively proven for use in the general population without cognitive impairment.
