Tayuya (Cayaponia tayuya) is a plant traditionally used in South American herbal medicine, particularly in Brazil, for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including colitis. The historical use of Tayuya as a remedy for gastrointestinal inflammation is well documented in ethnobotanical literature. Indigenous and local populations have used preparations from the roots of the plant to alleviate symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea associated with colitis and similar disorders.
