Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing colitis, particularly forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and infectious colitis. Scientific evidence suggests that S. boulardii can help modulate the gut microbiota, suppress pathogenic bacteria, and reduce inflammation. Several randomized, controlled trials and meta-analyses indicate that S. boulardii may decrease the duration and severity of diarrhea in cases of infectious colitis and can be helpful in preventing recurrence of Clostridioides difficile-associated colitis. Additionally, there is some evidence from animal models and small clinical trials that S. boulardii may improve symptoms or maintain remission in ulcerative colitis, though the data are less robust compared to its use in infectious or antibiotic-associated colitis.
The proposed mechanisms include modulation of immune responses, strengthening of the intestinal barrier, inhibition of pathogen binding, and production of anti-inflammatory factors. While S. boulardii is not considered a primary therapy for colitis, its use as an adjunctive treatment is supported by moderate-quality evidence, particularly for preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea and recurrent C. difficile infection. More research is needed for its use in chronic inflammatory forms of colitis, but current data provide a scientific rationale for its cautious use as a supportive therapy.
