Propionibacterium freudenreichii ssp. Shermanii is a probiotic bacterium primarily known for its role in Swiss cheese production, but it has also been studied for its potential beneficial effects in gut health, including inflammatory conditions like colitis. Scientific research investigating its effects on colitis is limited but emerging. Several preclinical studies using animal models have shown that administration of P. freudenreichii can reduce inflammation in chemically induced colitis, possibly through modulation of the immune system and production of beneficial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (notably propionate). These metabolites may contribute to anti-inflammatory responses and support intestinal barrier function.
For example, a 2017 study (Cousin et al., Frontiers in Immunology) demonstrated that P. freudenreichii could reduce colonic inflammation in mice by modulating cytokine profiles and enhancing regulatory T cells. However, human clinical trials are scarce, and evidence in patients with colitis (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) is minimal or indirect at best. Most studies are preliminary and do not provide strong, direct clinical recommendations.
In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and early experimental data supporting the use of P. freudenreichii ssp. Shermanii for colitis, the current level of evidence is low, and its use cannot be considered firmly validated for this indication.
