Pediococcus acidilactici is a lactic acid bacterium increasingly investigated for its potential probiotic benefits, including in gastrointestinal disorders such as colitis. Several preclinical studies (primarily in animal models) have demonstrated that P. acidilactici may help alleviate colitis symptoms. These studies suggest that the bacterium can modulate the gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier integrity, and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-6) in chemically induced colitis models. For example, mouse studies have found that administering P. acidilactici lessened colonic inflammation and improved clinical scores of colitis induced by agents like dextran sulfate sodium (DSS).
