Lactococcus casei is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing colitis, particularly inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis. Scientific interest in L. casei stems from its immunomodulatory effects and its potential to restore gut microbiota balance. Several animal studies have demonstrated that administration of L. casei can reduce inflammation, decrease disease activity, and ameliorate colonic damage in chemically-induced colitis models (e.g., DSS-induced colitis in mice). These effects are attributed to its ability to modulate cytokine production, enhance epithelial barrier function, and suppress pro-inflammatory pathways.

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited.
