Lactobacillus salivarius is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential benefits in treating or supporting patients with colitis, particularly inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease. The scientific rationale for its use is based on its ability to modulate the gut microbiota, enhance mucosal barrier function, and exert anti-inflammatory effects. Several preclinical studies in animal models of colitis have demonstrated that supplementation with L. salivarius can reduce inflammation, decrease disease severity, and improve histopathological scores. These effects are attributed to the bacterium’s production of lactic acid, which lowers gut pH and inhibits pathogenic bacteria, as well as its influence on immune cell signaling and cytokine production.

Clinical evidence in humans, though less robust, is emerging. Some small-scale clinical trials and pilot studies have reported beneficial effects of L. salivarius supplementation in patients with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis, including reduced disease activity and improved quality of life. For example, a randomized controlled trial (Mallardo et al., 2011) found that a strain of L. salivarius reduced recurrence rates in UC patients. However, data are still limited, and larger, well-controlled studies are needed to confirm these findings. In summary, there is moderate scientific validation for the use of L. salivarius in colitis, with promising but not definitive evidence supporting its efficacy.
