Lactobacillus sakei is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential benefits in managing colitis, particularly in experimental animal models. Several studies have demonstrated that L. sakei administration can reduce inflammation in mouse models of colitis, such as those induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the gut microbiota, enhancement of intestinal barrier function, and regulation of immune responses, notably through the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6, and the promotion of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10. For example, a 2017 study in Scientific Reports (Park et al.) showed that oral administration of L. sakei alleviated colitis symptoms and decreased inflammatory markers in mice.
However, while these preclinical results are promising, there is currently a lack of robust clinical data in humans. Most of the evidence is limited to animal studies, with only a few small-scale human trials or case reports, which do not yet allow for firm conclusions about efficacy or safety in people with colitis. Therefore, the evidence supporting L. sakei for colitis is scientific but preliminary, and its use should be considered experimental until more rigorous human studies are available.
