Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus kefiri is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in kefir, a fermented milk drink. Its use in supporting or treating colitis, particularly inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis, is supported by a limited but growing body of scientific evidence. Animal studies have shown that administration of L. kefiri can reduce inflammation and improve intestinal barrier function in models of colitis. For example, a 2017 study by Carasi et al. demonstrated that L. kefiri administration in mice reduced colonic inflammation and modulated immune responses. In vitro studies also suggest that L. kefiri can suppress the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhance mucosal immunity.

However, evidence in humans is currently very limited. Most clinical trials on probiotics in colitis use multi-strain preparations, with only a few including L. kefiri specifically, and human data are often extrapolated from related Lactobacillus species. While animal and cell-based studies provide a rationale for potential benefit, robust randomized controlled trials in humans are lacking.

In summary, the scientific support for L. kefiri in colitis is preliminary, with promising preclinical data but insufficient clinical evidence. Its use is not rooted in traditional medicine but rather in modern research on probiotics and gut health.
