Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis is a probiotic bacterium commonly used in dairy fermentation. There is some scientific interest in the use of L. delbrueckii strains for gastrointestinal health, including colitis, but the evidence is limited and primarily preclinical. Animal studies suggest that certain strains of L. delbrueckii (often in combination with other probiotics) can reduce inflammation and improve symptoms in models of colitis, presumably by modulating the gut microbiota, enhancing barrier function, and regulating immune responses. For example, a 2019 study in mice found that L. delbrueckii reduced colonic inflammation and improved mucosal integrity in chemically-induced colitis models. However, human clinical trials specifically evaluating L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis for the treatment or prevention of colitis are scarce. Most clinical studies on probiotics for colitis focus on other strains, such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or Bifidobacterium species. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive preclinical data, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. The overall quality of evidence supporting the use of L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis for colitis is modest, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
