Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Casein glycomacropeptide (CGMP), a bioactive peptide derived from casein during cheese production, has shown some promise in the scientific literature for supporting colitis, particularly in preclinical (animal) models. CGMP is known for its prebiotic effects and anti-inflammatory properties, which have been explored in the context of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including colitis. Several studies report that CGMP can modulate gut microbiota, reduce inflammation, and improve gut barrier integrity in animal models of colitis (e.g., DSS-induced colitis in mice). These effects are thought to be due to CGMP's ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines, promote beneficial microbial populations (such as bifidobacteria), and enhance mucosal healing.

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited. While CGMP is used in specialized medical foods for individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), its direct application for colitis in humans has not been widely studied in clinical trials. Currently, the evidence base is primarily preclinical, and while results are encouraging, more robust human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for colitis. Therefore, the use of CGMP for colitis is scientifically plausible with some supporting evidence, but it cannot be considered an established therapy based on current data.
