Bergenia pacumbis (syn. Bergenia ligulata) has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine in South Asia, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani, for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and lithotriptic properties. The plant is primarily known for its use in urinary disorders and kidney stones, but references to its use in gastrointestinal conditions, including colitis, do exist in traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys. These traditional uses are largely based on the plant's reputed ability to reduce inflammation and soothe mucosal linings.
However, direct scientific evidence specifically validating Bergenia pacumbis for the treatment or support of colitis is limited. Some preclinical studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of extracts from the plant, which could theoretically be beneficial in colitis or other inflammatory bowel conditions. These studies, however, have mostly been conducted in vitro or in animal models and are not directly focused on colitis. There is a lack of robust clinical trials or direct experimental evidence in humans for this specific indication. Therefore, the use of Bergenia pacumbis for colitis is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than contemporary scientific validation.
