Bacillus clausii is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential role in supporting gut health, including in conditions such as colitis. The scientific justification for its use in colitis, particularly ulcerative colitis and infectious colitis, is based on several small clinical trials and mechanistic studies.
B. clausii is valued for its ability to survive gastric acidity and reach the intestines, where it can modulate the gut microbiota, enhance mucosal barrier function, and produce antimicrobial substances. Some studies indicate that B. clausii may have immunomodulatory effects, such as reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and promoting regulatory T-cell responses, which could theoretically benefit patients with colitis.
However, the overall evidence base is limited. Most clinical studies have focused on antibiotic-associated diarrhea and general gastrointestinal health, rather than specifically on colitis. A few small trials and case reports suggest potential benefit as an adjunct to standard therapy in mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, with improvements in symptoms and some inflammatory markers, but these studies are limited by small sample size and methodological concerns.
As a result, while the use of B. clausii for colitis is supported by plausible mechanisms and preliminary clinical data, high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials are lacking.
