Apigenin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various plants, including parsley, celery, and chamomile. Its use in the context of colitis is primarily supported by preclinical scientific studies rather than traditional medicine. Several animal studies have investigated the effects of apigenin on experimental models of colitis, such as dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. These studies consistently demonstrate that apigenin administration can attenuate colon inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, and decrease levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway and modulation of gut microbiota composition.
However, while these findings are promising, they are largely limited to in vitro and animal research. There is not yet substantial clinical evidence in humans to confirm the efficacy or safety of apigenin for treatment or support of colitis. No major clinical trials have been published to date. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and early-stage evidence, it does not yet rise beyond preclinical validation. Further research, especially well-designed human studies, is needed before apigenin can be recommended for colitis management in clinical settings.
