Anthocyanins are a group of flavonoid compounds found in many fruits and vegetables, particularly those with red, blue, or purple coloration (such as berries, red cabbage, and purple corn). There is emerging scientific evidence supporting the potential role of anthocyanins in the management of colitis, particularly ulcerative colitis, which is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by inflammation of the colon lining.

Several preclinical studies (in vitro and in animal models) have demonstrated that anthocyanins possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may be beneficial in colitis. For instance, studies have shown that anthocyanin-rich extracts can reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine production, inhibit NF-κB signaling pathways, and mitigate oxidative stress in the colon. These effects contribute to a reduction in colon tissue damage and clinical symptoms in animal models of colitis (e.g., DSS-induced colitis in mice).

Limited human evidence exists, but a few small clinical trials and pilot studies have suggested that anthocyanin supplementation (most commonly from berries such as bilberries or blackcurrants) may improve symptoms and reduce markers of inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis. However, these trials are generally small, short-term, and sometimes lack rigorous controls.

In summary, while there is a scientific basis—mainly from animal and early clinical studies—suggesting that anthocyanins may help manage colitis, stronger, large-scale human clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish appropriate use in this context.
