Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aloe vera has a long history of use in traditional medicine for various gastrointestinal issues, including colitis. Its use is primarily based on traditional and anecdotal evidence rather than robust scientific validation. In traditional herbal medicine, aloe latex and gel have been used to soothe inflammation and promote healing of mucosal tissues, which is relevant to colitis, an inflammatory bowel condition. However, scientific studies on aloe's efficacy for colitis are limited and often of low quality. A few small clinical trials and animal studies have suggested that aloe vera gel may have some anti-inflammatory effects and could reduce symptoms in people with ulcerative colitis. For example, a small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2004 found that oral aloe vera gel led to clinical improvement in some patients with ulcerative colitis. Despite these findings, larger and more rigorous studies are lacking, and meta-analyses typically conclude that evidence is insufficient to recommend aloe as a treatment for colitis. Moreover, aloe latex (the yellow sap) can act as a strong laxative and may actually worsen symptoms in some individuals. In summary, aloe's use for colitis is rooted in traditional practices, with some preliminary but not definitive scientific support. Caution is advised due to limited high-quality evidence and potential side effects.
