Algae, particularly certain species such as Spirulina and Chlorella, have been explored for their potential benefits in managing colitis, an inflammatory condition of the colon. The scientific interest in algae for colitis stems mainly from their rich content of bioactive compounds, such as antioxidants (phycocyanin, chlorophyll), omega-3 fatty acids, and polysaccharides, all of which may modulate inflammation and oxidative stress—key factors in colitis pathogenesis.
Preclinical studies, especially in animal models of ulcerative colitis or chemically-induced colitis, have shown that supplementation with certain algae extracts can reduce inflammation, improve gut barrier function, and decrease the severity of colitis symptoms. For example, studies have reported that Spirulina platensis extract can suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines and protect against colonic tissue damage. Similarly, Chlorella vulgaris has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in rodent models.
However, while these results are promising, clinical evidence in humans is limited. Only a handful of small-scale human trials or case studies exist, and many rely on surrogate markers rather than direct measures of colitis severity. Thus, current scientific support for algae in colitis is moderate (rated 3/5): promising preclinical evidence, but insufficient robust clinical validation. Algae-based interventions may complement, but not replace, established medical therapies. More well-designed, large-scale human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
