Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema cum bile (commonly known as "Arisaema with bile") is a traditional ingredient used in certain systems of Chinese medicine, notably in formulations targeting pediatric conditions such as colic. The use is primarily justified by traditional practice, especially within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is believed to "transform phlegm" and "calm the spirit." The preparation typically combines Arisaema erubescens (Tian Nan Xing) with animal bile, which is thought to enhance its ability to resolve "phlegm-heat" and relieve symptoms such as restlessness or abdominal discomfort in children—manifestations sometimes interpreted as colic in modern terms. However, there is minimal to no scientific validation from controlled clinical trials supporting its effectiveness or safety specifically for childhood colic. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on case reports within traditional literature, and modern pharmacological studies on Arisaema cum bile do not focus on pediatric gastrointestinal conditions. Additionally, Arisaema species contain toxic compounds (notably calcium oxalate crystals), and improper processing could pose health risks. As such, while its use for colic is documented in historical and traditional contexts, the evidence base is weak and largely unsupported by modern medicine.
