Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, where it has been employed to address digestive complaints, including colic in adults. Traditionally, nutmeg is believed to possess carminative and antispasmodic properties, purportedly helping to relieve gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, and cramping associated with colic. Preparations often involve powdered nutmeg mixed with other herbs or ingredients and administered in small doses.

However, there is very limited scientific evidence to substantiate these traditional uses. Modern clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies specifically evaluating nutmeg’s efficacy in treating adult colic are lacking. Most of the available information is anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical records. Some laboratory studies suggest nutmeg has antispasmodic activity in animal models, which may theoretically support its traditional use, but these findings have not been directly translated to human clinical outcomes for colic.

In summary, the use of nutmeg for adult colic is primarily justified by tradition, with scant scientific validation. Caution is warranted, as high or prolonged use of nutmeg can be toxic, leading to serious side effects including hallucinations and organ damage.
