Evidence supporting the use of: Lingustilides
For the health condition: Colic (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lingustilides are a group of phthalide compounds found primarily in plants of the Apiaceae family, such as Ligusticum chuanxiong (Szechuan lovage) and Angelica sinensis (dong quai). Their use for treating colic, especially in adults, is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine practices, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Historically, extracts from these plants have been used to alleviate various forms of abdominal pain, including colic, due to their purported antispasmodic and analgesic properties. However, the direct scientific evidence supporting lingustilides for colic relief in adults is limited and mostly preclinical. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that lingustilides can relax smooth muscle tissue and inhibit spasms, which could theoretically relieve colic symptoms. Nevertheless, clinical trials in humans specifically addressing the treatment of colic with lingustilides are lacking. Therefore, while traditional use is documented, the scientific evidence base is weak, and their use for colic in adults should be considered as supported by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
