Bergenia pacumbis (syn. Bergenia ligulata), commonly known as "Pashanbheda" in Ayurveda, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems across India and surrounding regions. One of its traditional applications is for the treatment of colic, particularly in adults. Colic, in traditional contexts, broadly refers to abdominal pain or discomfort, often linked with digestive disturbances. In Ayurveda, the root and rhizome of Bergenia pacumbis are used as a carminative and antispasmodic, believed to relieve abdominal pain and promote the expulsion of gas.

There is, however, limited scientific evidence directly investigating or validating the efficacy of Bergenia pacumbis for adult colic. Most modern research on the plant focuses on its lithotriptic (stone-dissolving), antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. While some pharmacological studies suggest possible spasmolytic activity (muscle relaxation), which could theoretically aid colic symptoms, these findings are preliminary and often based on in vitro or animal models rather than robust clinical trials in humans. Thus, the use of Bergenia pacumbis for adult colic remains primarily supported by traditional and historical use rather than strong scientific validation.
