Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema (commonly known as Jack-in-the-pulpit or cobra lily) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, species such as Arisaema erubescens (Tian Nan Xing) are used primarily to dispel phlegm, relieve convulsions, and treat conditions such as cough, epilepsy, and swelling. Occasionally, Arisaema is mentioned in ethnobotanical literature as a remedy for digestive issues, but its use for adult colic is not prominent or specific. The available traditional sources discuss its use for "abdominal pain" or "stomachache," but not specifically "colic" as defined in Western medicine. There is little to no scientific research specifically investigating Arisaema for colic in adults, and its pharmacological studies focus more on anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. Most references to its use for digestive complaints are anecdotal or based on broader traditional categorizations. Therefore, the justification for using Arisaema for adult colic is based on limited traditional use, with very weak direct evidence and no scientific validation.
