Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Alder Buckthorn (Frangula alnus) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, primarily as a laxative due to its anthraquinone glycosides. Its application for colic in adults is based on the traditional belief that its mild laxative action could relieve gastrointestinal discomfort and promote bowel movements, which may help alleviate symptoms sometimes associated with colic, such as abdominal pain and bloating. However, traditional sources do not distinguish between types of colic (e.g., hepatic, renal, or gastrointestinal colic), and the term is often used loosely to describe various forms of abdominal distress.

Despite its historical use, there is very limited scientific evidence to support the efficacy or safety of Alder Buckthorn specifically for the treatment of colic in adults. Modern herbal texts and pharmacopoeias primarily reference its use as a stimulant laxative and warn about potential side effects, such as cramping and diarrhea, particularly with prolonged use. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly investigating Alder Buckthorn for adult colic have been published. Consequently, its use for this purpose remains rooted in tradition, and contemporary medical guidance does not recommend it for colic management.
