Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Water Lily (Nymphaea spp. or Nymphaea alba, for example) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. In these pharmacopoeias, Water Lily has been employed for its purported soothing, cooling, and demulcent effects. Some ethnobotanical sources indicate that Water Lily preparations—such as infusions or decoctions made from its flowers, leaves, or rhizomes—were used to alleviate symptoms associated with colds accompanied by fever, likely due to its perceived cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific validation for these specific uses is lacking. There are very few, if any, rigorous clinical studies evaluating Water Lily extracts for the treatment of colds or fever in humans. While some in vitro studies have noted weak antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects in related species, these findings do not directly translate to clinical efficacy for colds with fever. Overall, the use of Water Lily in this context is rooted in tradition rather than science, and evidence supporting its benefit is minimal and primarily anecdotal.
