Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Brandy has a long history of being used as a home remedy for colds, particularly those accompanied by fever. This practice is rooted primarily in tradition and folklore rather than scientific research. Historically, brandy and other spirits were believed to "warm" the body, stimulate circulation, and induce mild sedation or relaxation, which some thought might help with the discomforts of a cold. The alcohol in brandy can create a temporary sensation of warmth due to vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and may offer some subjective relief from symptoms such as chills or malaise. However, there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating that brandy or other alcoholic beverages have any direct antiviral or immune-boosting effects that would speed recovery from a cold or reduce fever. In fact, alcohol can potentially worsen dehydration, especially in the context of fever, and may impair immune function if consumed in excess. Current medical guidance generally discourages the use of alcohol to treat colds or fevers, particularly in children or vulnerable populations. Thus, while brandy’s use for colds with fever is supported by tradition, it is not supported by scientific validation.
