Great Plantain (Plantago major) has been traditionally used in various cultures for treating respiratory ailments, including colds. Historical records and ethnobotanical sources document its use in European, Native American, and Asian herbal medicine as a remedy for sore throats, coughs, bronchitis, and other symptoms associated with upper respiratory tract infections. The leaves contain bioactive compounds such as aucubin, allantoin, and mucilage, which are believed to exert soothing, anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial effects. These properties may provide symptomatic relief for cold-related discomforts, such as throat irritation or minor cough.

However, there is a lack of robust clinical research specifically validating the efficacy of Great Plantain for preventing or treating the common cold. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than controlled scientific studies. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential immunomodulatory or anti-inflammatory effects, but these are not sufficient to confirm benefits for cold prevention in humans.
