Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sambucus nigra (elderberry) has a long history of traditional use for treating colds and other respiratory illnesses, but there is also a growing body of scientific evidence supporting its potential benefit as a decongestant and for reducing cold symptoms. Several randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials have evaluated elderberry extracts and syrups in the context of upper respiratory tract infections. Some studies have shown that elderberry supplementation can reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms, possibly due to its high content of flavonoids, which may have antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. For example, a 2016 randomized controlled trial in air travelers found that elderberry extract significantly reduced cold duration and symptom severity compared to placebo (Tiralongo et al., Nutrients, 2016). Additionally, laboratory studies indicate that elderberry extracts can inhibit the replication of certain respiratory viruses, such as influenza viruses, and may modulate cytokine production, which can help alleviate nasal congestion. However, while these results are promising, the overall quality and size of clinical studies remain limited, and more rigorous research is needed to confirm these effects and determine optimal dosing. Thus, the use of Sambucus nigra for cold symptom relief is supported by both traditional use and moderate scientific evidence.
