Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Peppermint essence (or peppermint oil) has a long history of traditional use for relieving symptoms of colds, particularly as a decongestant. The primary active component, menthol, is believed to provide a cooling sensation and the subjective feeling of easier breathing. Historically, inhaling steam infused with peppermint oil or using menthol rubs on the chest has been common in various cultures as a home remedy for nasal congestion.

However, scientific evidence supporting the use of peppermint essence as a decongestant is limited. While menthol can produce a sensation of increased airflow in the nasal passages, controlled clinical studies have shown that it does not objectively reduce nasal airway resistance or improve airflow. The perceived benefit is primarily due to menthol’s ability to activate cold-sensitive receptors (TRPM8) in the nasal mucosa, creating a subjective feeling of relief without physiologically clearing the airways.

Overall, while the use of peppermint essence for congestion is well-established in traditional medicine, robust scientific validation for its effectiveness as a true decongestant is lacking. It may offer temporary symptomatic relief due to its sensory effects, but should not be considered a substitute for evidence-based treatments for colds or respiratory congestion.
