Evidence supporting the use of: Mucolase
For the health condition: Colds (decongestant)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Mucolase is an oral preparation containing lysozyme hydrochloride, an enzyme that breaks down the polysaccharide walls of bacteria and helps decrease the viscosity of mucus. Its use as a mucolytic agent is supported by scientific evidence, especially in countries such as Japan and the Philippines, where it is registered for medical use. Several clinical studies and reviews have investigated the efficacy of lysozyme as a mucolytic and anti-inflammatory agent in respiratory tract infections, including the common cold. These studies indicate that lysozyme can help liquefy sputum, facilitate expectoration, and may have some mild antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the overall strength of evidence is moderate, as few large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials exist, and much of the data comes from smaller or older studies.
While lysozyme’s mucolytic effect is biologically plausible and documented, it is generally considered adjunctive therapy and not first-line or standalone treatment for cold symptoms. Major international guidelines for the management of the common cold do not routinely recommend lysozyme-based mucolytics; however, in some Asian countries, it is included as part of supportive therapy. In summary, there is scientific basis for the use of Mucolase as a mucolytic in colds, but the evidence is moderate (3/5), and its clinical impact compared to more established decongestants is less well studied.
