Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Elder flower (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for treating symptoms of colds and flu, particularly as a decongestant and diaphoretic (to promote sweating). Historical records from European herbal medicine describe elder flower infusions as remedies for respiratory congestion, fever, and inflammation. The flowers contain flavonoids, phenolic acids, and other bioactive compounds, and traditional herbalists have valued them for their presumed ability to reduce mucus and ease nasal and bronchial congestion.

However, scientific research directly supporting elder flower’s efficacy as a decongestant in humans is limited. Most modern studies focus on elder berry (the fruit), not the flower, and these studies often investigate antiviral effects rather than decongestant properties. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of elder flower extracts, which could theoretically alleviate some cold symptoms, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, the use of elder flower for decongestion during colds is primarily justified by tradition and anecdotal evidence rather than by strong scientific validation.

In summary, elder flower’s use as a decongestant for colds is rooted in centuries of traditional practice, but current scientific evidence supporting this application is weak and insufficient for firm conclusions.
