Evidence supporting the use of: Capillary Artemisia
For the health condition: Colds (decongestant)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Capillary Artemisia (Artemisia capillaris), also known as Yin Chen Hao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use, primarily for liver and gallbladder disorders. Its use as a remedy for colds, especially as a decongestant, is not a prominent feature in classical herbal texts or modern phytotherapy. However, in some traditional practices, particularly within TCM, Artemisia capillaris may sometimes be included in formulations aimed at 'clearing heat' or addressing symptoms that occasionally overlap with those of respiratory infections, such as fever or malaise. It is not considered a primary decongestant herb, and there is minimal direct evidence or robust tradition supporting its use for nasal or chest congestion specifically.
Scientific studies on Artemisia capillaris have largely focused on its hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but there is a lack of clinical evidence or experimental data supporting its efficacy as a decongestant or in the direct treatment of cold symptoms. Thus, the use of Capillary Artemisia for colds or as a decongestant is justified mainly by tradition, and the evidence supporting this application is weak (rating: 1). Its inclusion for this purpose in herbal formulas is rare and not widely supported by either strong historical precedent or scientific validation.
