Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Atractylone is a sesquiterpene compound found in the rhizome of Atractylodes species, particularly Atractylodes macrocephala and Atractylodes lancea. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these plants are widely used to treat a variety of ailments, including the common cold and conditions associated with dampness and phlegm, which often manifest as congestion. The use of atractylone and its source herbs as a decongestant is rooted primarily in traditional practices rather than in robust scientific research. Traditional texts and modern TCM formulations frequently include Atractylodes to "dry dampness," "strengthen the spleen," and "dispel wind-cold," which are considered causes of cold-like symptoms. However, modern pharmacological studies on atractylone are limited. There is some preliminary research indicating anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, but direct evidence supporting its effectiveness as a decongestant in colds is lacking. No high-quality clinical trials have demonstrated that atractylone itself has significant decongestant activity or efficacy in treating cold symptoms according to biomedical standards. Thus, its use for this purpose is justified by tradition with minimal scientific validation available.
