For the health condition: Colds (decongestant)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Andrographis paniculata is a traditional medicinal herb widely used in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Thai medicine for managing various infections, including the common cold. In recent decades, its use for colds has been investigated in several clinical trials and systematic reviews. The most commonly studied preparation is standardized Andrographis extract, often in combination with other herbs (such as in the product Kan Jang).
A 2017 Cochrane review and several meta-analyses have found that Andrographis extract appears to modestly reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms compared to placebo, particularly for sore throat, cough, and nasal symptoms. The mechanism is believed to involve anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, though direct decongestant actions are less clearly established. The quality of evidence ranges from low to moderate due to variability in study design, sample sizes, and extract standardization.
Overall, while more large-scale and rigorously controlled studies are needed, current scientific evidence supports a modest benefit of Andrographis for alleviating some symptoms of the common cold. It is generally well tolerated, with mild gastrointestinal adverse events reported in some cases. Thus, Andrographis use for cold symptoms is justified by both traditional practice and a growing body of scientific research.
