Mushrooms, particularly certain medicinal varieties such as reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), shiitake (Lentinula edodes), and maitake (Grifola frondosa), have been studied for their potential antiviral and immune-modulating properties. These effects are attributed primarily to bioactive compounds such as beta-glucans, polysaccharides, and triterpenoids. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts from these mushrooms can stimulate immune cell activity (e.g., macrophages, NK cells) and may inhibit viral replication, including viruses that cause respiratory infections.
Human clinical evidence is less robust but growing. Some randomized controlled trials have shown that mushroom extracts may reduce the incidence, duration, or severity of upper respiratory tract infections, including the common cold. For example, a 2014 study found that shiitake mushroom consumption improved immune markers in healthy adults. Another trial using a proprietary blend of mushroom extracts suggested reduced cold and flu symptoms in participants, though sample sizes were small and methodologies varied.
While traditional medicine systems have used mushrooms for general immune health, current scientific evidence specifically supporting their use as antivirals for the common cold is moderate but not conclusive. The evidence base is promising enough to justify further research, but mushrooms should not be considered a primary treatment for viral infections. Overall, the evidence level is rated as 3 out of 5.
