Thyroid hormone (typically in the form of levothyroxine or desiccated thyroid extract) is scientifically validated for use in individuals with hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient thyroid hormone. One of the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism is cold intolerance, which often manifests as cold hands and feet. This occurs due to a reduced metabolic rate and impaired peripheral circulation, both of which are regulated by thyroid hormones. Several clinical studies and medical guidelines recognize that thyroid hormone replacement can alleviate cold sensitivity and improve peripheral blood flow in hypothyroid patients. For example, the American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society both list cold intolerance among the symptoms that may resolve with appropriate thyroid hormone replacement therapy. However, it is important to note that thyroid supplementation is only effective for cold hands and feet when these symptoms are due to hypothyroidism. In individuals with normal thyroid function, thyroid hormone replacement is neither indicated nor beneficial—and can be harmful. Therefore, the evidence strongly supports thyroid hormone use for cold hands and feet specifically in the context of hypothyroidism, but not as a general remedy for these symptoms in the absence of thyroid dysfunction.
