Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Liquid liver fractions, which are extracts derived from animal liver tissue, have historically been used as a nutritional supplement to support patients with cirrhosis or other liver diseases, particularly before the advent of modern medicine. The rationale for their use was based on the principle that organ extracts could provide essential nutrients and factors presumed to be deficient in individuals with compromised liver function. In the early to mid-20th century, before specific therapies for cirrhosis and its complications were available, liver extracts were administered to provide B vitamins (notably B12), proteins, and other micronutrients. However, this practice was not based on rigorous scientific evidence but rather on anecdotal reports and the general belief in organotherapy—using animal organs to support the function of ailing human organs.

With the advancement of medical science, it became clear that while nutritional support is important in cirrhosis, there is no compelling evidence that liquid liver fractions provide any therapeutic benefit beyond what can be achieved with balanced nutrition and appropriate vitamin supplementation. Clinical studies have not demonstrated a specific benefit of liver extracts in improving outcomes for cirrhosis patients. Today, the use of liquid liver fractions is largely obsolete, replaced by evidence-based therapies and comprehensive nutritional management. Therefore, while the practice has traditional roots, the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is minimal.
