Evidence supporting the use of: L-Gluthathione
For the health condition: Cirrhosis of the Liver
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
L-Glutathione is an antioxidant that plays a critical role in cellular defense mechanisms, particularly in the liver where it helps detoxify harmful substances. There is some scientific interest in using L-Glutathione as a supportive therapy in liver diseases, including cirrhosis. Research has shown that patients with chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis and hepatitis, often have depleted glutathione levels in hepatic tissues, which may contribute to oxidative stress and further liver damage.
Some small clinical studies and animal models suggest that supplementing with glutathione or its precursors may improve certain markers of liver function, reduce oxidative damage, and possibly slow the progression of liver fibrosis. For example, intravenous glutathione has been used in some studies to improve liver function tests in patients with chronic liver disease. However, the evidence is not robust: studies are generally small, sometimes lacking in rigorous design, and there is little consensus on optimal dosing or long-term benefit. Oral bioavailability of glutathione is also a concern, as it is rapidly broken down in the digestive tract.
Overall, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting the use of L-Glutathione in cirrhosis, the quality and quantity of data are limited. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend its routine use in cirrhosis management, and further large-scale, well-controlled trials are needed.
