Indian Tinospora, known as Tinospora cordifolia or “Guduchi,” is primarily used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a wide range of liver disorders, including cirrhosis. In classical Ayurvedic texts, Guduchi is described as a “rasayana” (rejuvenator) and is often recommended for supporting liver health, detoxification, and improving overall vitality. The use of Tinospora cordifolia in cirrhosis is based on its traditional properties of being hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory.

Some preclinical studies in animal models suggest that extracts of Tinospora cordifolia may protect liver cells from damage induced by toxins such as carbon tetrachloride or paracetamol. These studies have demonstrated decreased markers of liver injury and improved antioxidant status in liver tissue. However, robust clinical trials in humans with cirrhosis are lacking, and available clinical data are limited to small pilot studies or case reports, which do not provide high-quality evidence for efficacy.

Thus, the use of Indian Tinospora for cirrhosis is primarily justified by traditional practices and historical usage in Ayurvedic medicine, with only preliminary scientific support from laboratory and animal research. While promising, these findings are insufficient to recommend widespread clinical use for cirrhosis until more rigorous human studies are conducted.
