Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Honduran Sarsaparilla (Smilax regelii and related species) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Central and South America. It has been used for a variety of conditions, including skin disorders, rheumatism, and as a general tonic. In some traditional herbal practices, sarsaparilla is believed to support liver health and is sometimes used in formulas aimed at treating liver ailments, including cirrhosis. However, the rationale for its use in cirrhosis is primarily based on anecdotal evidence and traditional beliefs regarding its "purifying" or detoxifying properties. Scientifically, there is very limited evidence to support sarsaparilla's efficacy in treating or supporting cirrhosis of the liver. Most of the available research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and possible immune-modulating properties, but these studies are preliminary and do not directly address cirrhosis. No well-designed clinical trials have demonstrated its effectiveness for liver cirrhosis in humans. Therefore, while its use is justified historically and culturally, there is little to no scientific validation for its application in liver cirrhosis. Anyone considering sarsaparilla for serious liver conditions should consult a healthcare professional.
