Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustilide is a phthalide compound found predominantly in traditional Chinese medicinal herbs such as Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong). Its use to support or treat circulation—especially cerebral circulation—primarily stems from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practices. In TCM, these herbs have been used for centuries to "invigorate blood," "dispel wind," and "alleviate pain," which are interpreted as improving blood flow, including to the brain.

Scientific studies on ligustilide itself are limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest ligustilide may have vasodilatory, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects, potentially influencing cerebral blood flow (Wang et al., 2011). However, robust clinical trials in humans confirming significant improvements in brain circulation are lacking. The majority of evidence remains anecdotal or based on TCM clinical experience rather than rigorous modern scientific validation.

In summary, while ligustilide-containing herbs are traditionally used to support brain circulation, the scientific evidence directly supporting this use is weak and mostly indirect. Therefore, the use of ligustilide for cerebral circulation is justified primarily by traditional use with limited supporting scientific data.
