Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Oriental Ginseng, also known as Panax ginseng, has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine for centuries to support cognitive function and improve circulation, including to the brain. Historical records from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) describe ginseng as a "Qi tonic," believed to invigorate the body, enhance mental clarity, and promote healthy blood flow. Ancient texts and practitioners have recommended ginseng for symptoms suggestive of poor cerebral circulation, such as dizziness, fatigue, and forgetfulness.

Modern scientific studies have explored ginseng’s effects on cognitive function and circulation, but evidence specifically supporting its role in enhancing cerebral blood flow is still emerging and somewhat inconsistent. Some small-scale clinical trials and laboratory research indicate that ginsenosides, the active components in ginseng, may exert vasodilatory effects and improve endothelial function, which could theoretically enhance brain circulation. However, most of the robust support for this use remains rooted in tradition rather than contemporary large-scale clinical validation. Thus, the evidence rating is moderate, primarily due to longstanding traditional use, with partial support from preliminary scientific findings.
