Ginkgoflavones, the primary flavonoid compounds found in Ginkgo biloba extracts, are frequently used as part of herbal preparations aimed at improving cerebral circulation. The use of Ginkgo biloba for cognitive support and vascular health has a long tradition, particularly in Chinese medicine, but there is also a significant body of scientific research evaluating its effects. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated Ginkgo biloba extract (which contains ginkgoflavones among other constituents) for its impact on cerebral blood flow and cognitive function, particularly in elderly populations and those with mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Ginkgo biloba extract appears to exert vasodilatory effects on blood vessels, reduce blood viscosity, and promote microcirculation, potentially through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms attributed in part to its flavone glycosides (ginkgoflavones). However, while some studies report modest improvements in cognitive performance and cerebral blood flow, other trials find limited or no significant effects. The evidence is most robust for standardized extracts (such as EGb 761), not isolated ginkgoflavones. Thus, while there is scientific support for the use of Ginkgo biloba extract (and by extension, ginkgoflavones as active constituents) in supporting cerebral circulation, the overall strength of evidence is moderate and not unequivocal. Further research is needed to clarify the specific role of ginkgoflavones apart from other extract components.
