Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo flavone glycosides, derived from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, are widely used in supplements intended to support cerebral circulation. The primary rationale for this use is grounded in both traditional practices and scientific investigation. Traditionally, extracts of Ginkgo biloba have been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to treat ailments believed to be related to poor circulation, including memory loss and cognitive decline in the elderly.

Modern research has focused on the standardized extract EGb 761, which contains 24% ginkgo flavone glycosides. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have examined its effects on cognitive function and cerebral blood flow. Some studies report modest improvements in parameters such as blood viscosity, vasodilation, and microcirculatory function. These effects are thought to be mediated by antioxidant properties, inhibition of platelet-activating factor, and modulation of nitric oxide.

Evidence supporting its effectiveness is mixed. While some clinical trials have noted small benefits in cognitive measures for patients with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, other large, well-controlled studies have found little to no significant effect versus placebo. The quality and consistency of positive findings vary, and benefits, if present, tend to be modest. There is, however, a moderate level of scientific support for the claim that ginkgo flavone glycosides can positively affect cerebral circulation, justifying a mid-level evidence rating.
