Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius, has a long history of traditional use in East Asian medicine for supporting general vitality and cognitive function. In recent decades, scientific research has explored its effects on circulation, including cerebral (brain) circulation. Several studies—both in animals and humans—suggest that ginseng may improve blood flow, reduce oxidative stress, and support endothelial function, potentially benefiting brain circulation. The primary active constituents, ginsenosides, are believed to modulate nitric oxide production, which can promote vasodilation and improve blood flow.

Randomized controlled trials in humans have shown that ginseng supplementation can have modest positive effects on cognitive performance, possibly mediated by improved cerebral blood flow. A 2018 review in Journal of Ginseng Research and other systematic reviews note improvements in cognitive function and some evidence for enhanced cerebral perfusion, though results are not always consistent and often limited by small sample sizes and short durations.

Despite promising findings, the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some studies showing benefit and others not. It is generally agreed that more large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed for definitive conclusions. Thus, while there is scientific support for the use of ginseng in supporting brain circulation, the evidence is not yet robust.
